A sustainable path to a resilient future

India the home of 18% of total world population, also on of the most water-stressed nations. India is endowed with only four percent (4%) of total global renewable water resources. The water system in India has been pushed to the breaking point, untreated wastewater, overextraction of ground water and severe impact of climatic change, leading to unavoidable challenges in near future.

The major cities have turned into flood hotspots due to extreme rainfall, clogged drains and unplanned urban growth. In recent past, a severe water logging has been faced by Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai along with infrastructural breakdowns not solely due to heavy rains but because of natural pathways for flow of water have been lost.

A weak water governance and impact of adverse climate is the main reason form both scarcity and flooding. The loss of natural water bodies and rapid urbanization has intensified flooding in Urban parts of our Nation. Concrete has replaced our wetlands and lakes impacting severely in water absorbing capacity of land, while drainage system is overwhelmed in extreme rainfall. In Hyderabad silted culverts and blocked drains worsen water logging, and in Chennai, river and wetland encroachments amplify monsoon floods.
